And probably the best thing about Kona is that it’s economical. It’s for anyone who wants to enjoy a fine cup of coffee without spending a lot of money on expensive appliances. It’s stylish, affordable and functional French press.

The protective outer shell is available in a choice of colors. Black, red or stainless steel.

Functionally, it keeps a solid grip on the carafe for hot or cold liquids. (Think Iced Coffee or Iced Tea as well on a hot day.) Enhanced insulation capabilities preserves the freshness of your coffee for a long time.

About the product

Kona presents a product in classic French Press styling that delivers on what’s expected from a French Press. That is extracting flavor, and producing a delicious brew.

But it doesn’t stop there. The design of the insulated outer shell gives added protection against chips and cracks to the carafe of borosilicate glass. It also provides a larger handle for grip which is helpful if arthritis or hand strength is becoming an issue.

The product is a little lighter in weight than other French Presses we used. An advantage for travel or limited mobility as the carafe is still solid in firm housing but framing is lighter. Plunger knob is easy to grip and use.

The glass is ‘borosilicate glass’ so it’s not easily damaged and it’s engineered to withstand high temperatures.

FAQ’s

What is Borosilicate Glass?

Borosilicate is non-toxic and safe. It’s resistant to chemical change making it a very safe choice for products that will encounter extreme temperature changes like glass and kitchenware.

The carafe glass contains around 15% borosilicate which allows the glass to withstand extreme changes in temperature when exposed to heat. This means you can pour boiling hot water into the  pitcher without cracking the glass.

This type of glass is extra thick and insulates as well as protecting the unit from any breakage or damage. Think the qualities of Pyrex which contains a percentage borosilicate.

Importantly, the production process does not include any harmful chemicals or materials, which means you get a product that’s safe for long-term use. It’s completely non toxic.

Borosilicate glass has been used in production since the late 1800’s (1893 in fact under the brand name Duran) so it’s stood the test of time.

This glass is safe to drink from, can be put into the dishwasher or microwave and used to store hot liquid.

This is the reason the Kona French Press is highly popular and stands apart from its rivals. Note: Bodum’s Chambord French Press also uses Borosilicate glass.

How to use a French Press

  • Grind coffee beans. A course blend is recommended. This is because a fine blend will block holes in the filter and will not deliver the results you’re after.
  • Place carafe on a firm surface. Hold and firmly remove plunger.
  • Add coffee grounds to the French Press. Ratio that suits is individual as it depends on the strength you like your coffee. To begin, you might like to try 1 rounded tablespoon to 1 cup (4 oz) of water. And adjust formula to taste.
  • Boil water and allow to sit for a couple of minutes until temperature reduces slightly. Water temperature, when added to French Press, should be 90°C or 195° F which is just slightly below boiling point.
  • Pour over the ground coffee and stir. Don’t plunge yet.
  • Cover with lid to steep coffee. Allow to brew for 4 minutes
  • Carefully and evenly press down on the plunger, pushing coffee grounds to the bottom.
  • Pour and enjoy.

How to clean Kona French Press

The stainless steel filter is easily removed for cleaning and the carafe is dishwasher safe and microwave safe. It’s a very easy process.
